To celebrate our Swedish heritage, my friend Kirsten Housel and I are holding a party for Midsommar on July 21st. In Sweden, the sun lasts all day and through the night, and in a country where at other times the night does the same, it is a reason to celebrate! Traditionally, there are many flowers, food, and bonfires, which makes this yet another Swedish holiday carried over from pagan times virtually intact. This explains why my otherwise quite conservative mother wholeheartedly believes in faeries. Anyways, this is a day for the fire goddess, a goddess of fertility and creativity, so everyone rub your bellies, put on your flower crowns, and enjoy!

My dear girl Mia Sladyk always has great tales of the rock n roll to tell, one being that a certain member of the band Spoon mistook her e-mail address (msladyk@...) as being "Ms. Lady K." Certainly many of us call her by that moniker now. During the Christmas season, Ms. K indicated that she would like to receive a Spoon prayer candle, but I really felt she should have her own, replete with bacon, Flying Vs, and ski poles. Here's a photo of the lovely Sister Sladyk in Bali, if you'd like to compare the likeness:

Looking through some work from college, I came across this image - a favorite of mine and of many others. This was the picture found on my first promotional card! It still graces many of my friends' refrigerators and mantles, ten years later.
The assignment was to illustrate an article titled "Eating Right." Fire, the spirit, is my food. This piece led to some great commissions and is worth a revisit, mainly as an auger of inspiration. Muse, bring it on! I'm ready to paint, especially after recently digging out of storage some of the same inks that were used in this picture.

D Generation Book Cover Illustration

For the cover of Eric Best's newest novel, The D Generation, I created this watercolor to his specifications. Lord knows I love to draw hot cars and hot blonde guys, and I really enjoyed using some special watercolor techniques, particularly for the clouds and rust effects. It is rare that I do not use a nib pen for any line work, and I like the old-photo, washed-out feel here.

When Terminal 5 opened more than 3 years ago, we didn't have any coverings for the box office windows, and I resolved to make us some that were easy to attach, and, of course, fanciful and attractive. Eventually I found a good piece of wood, which I cut to the right size and painted. They are attached with industrial velcro - we just have to pop them in or out of place whenever we need to close or open a window. I added these two images in acrylic: the first taken directly from "The Space Shuttle Operator's Manual" of an astronaut, and the second modified from that image to depict a deep-sea diver. They seem to be living in harmony.

Here's some pictures of Otis and Teague, the Labrador Retriever and Great Dane who belong to and who also participated in the wedding of my cousin Joe and his wife Jenn Layn, in Peacham Vermont on September 25th. It was a glorious affair, fun had by everyone, with the most breathtaking landscape and perfect weather to be desired. Many blessings for you life together, Joe and Jenn!

Farewell, Plutonia (graphic novel teaser)

As part of the extras package for The Contrarian's "Farewell Plutonia," Casey Rea Hunter commissioned me to author and illustrate an installment of a graphic novel, included in the extras package of the CD. I also did the layout for the liner notes/lyrics package, also included. This deluxe package can only be had via The Contrarian Media site (link below), and I highly recommend the album (my favorite song is "Wormwood Star"). The themes of the record were very aligned to the ones found in an old story I dusted off and illustrated for the occasion. With media policy as it is, the message is ever more timely.

Here are photos from the July 11, 2010 Summer edition of Webster Hall's Quarterly Arts Soiree. The incredible Gerard MacNamee, Jenny Muskin, and others organized this fantastic event, while offering invaluable support for my project.

Guests inclded Stefanie Schwartz, Jeremiah Furr (pictured), and Emily St. John, who took these photos. Of course, this project and especially the fish tank would have never been possible without the enthusiasm and expertise of Noel Rose, proprietor of Anchor Aquarium Service. Many thanks are due to all of these talented people.

It was virtually impossible to capture the effect of the fish tank piece with it's live fish, reflective elements, and ever-changing picture screen. It is something to be observed in person, and if you're like me (which, to my delight, many spectators were), to be gazed upon for a long time in wonder. Venues who would like to display the fish tank or other pieces can contact me at nortonanalog@gmail.com to set it up. Most of the pieces are available for sale. Any other questions or comments are of course welcome.

The Gaming Commission - Electric Junk

Here is the illustration and layout for The Gaming Commission's debut album, "Electric Junk." The photos are self-explanatory; I've also included the drawing/typesetting for the DVD case, which is similar to the LP, and the LP label designs. The raven image was used as a motif for the DVD package and as a stamp on the inner sleeve. The vinyl and poster images were letterpressed by the impressive Mr. Dan Selzer, who was a pleasure to work with, as was Andy Levine, who is both a gent and a creative musical force. Putting together these sleeves with Andy and his hometown crew was a supreme pleasure. My dear friend Emily was kind enough to take some documentary photographs of the final product, but her paintings are truly where it's at. Be sure to visit The Gaming Commission's MySpace page here!

Here is the poster for my first solo show, which ran for a month in 2001. I presented multi-media pieces of illustration, painting, sculpture, and interactive art along the themes of sensory stimulus in the fragmentation of memory, more specifically the psychological rearrangements caused by the interplay of sound and time. Yes, I have moments of erudite expression.

Neshamah in Hebrew refers to the high soul, the breath of God, a spiritual body-force, and is similar to the concept of prana. There is a connotation of the body as an instrument for the music of the Big Soul. I'm feeling that.

I know that Easter was two days ago, but I did want to share this drawing for a greeting card that I created. Easter itself was a splendid affair, in which myself and a group of wonderful friends ate a leg of lamb, veggies, etc., then moved on to a delicious raspberry cake and cookies. There was good beer, good wine, and good friends, and at the end of the evening we listened to a lot of great noisy punk rock records. Welcome to spring!

Just finished this in-store banner design for the Farmingdale Meat Market, a division of Main Street Meats, purveyors of fine edible flesh. My payment was, appropriately so, a large quantity of delicious meats. I look forward to eating heartily.
The animals were done with embroidery, and looks like my mom is going to make the original embellished fabric into a quilt piece for one of my (now many) nephews. As if they weren't already cute enough to eat!

For this one, I used a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious starring Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant, in what is perhaps the hottest make-out scene on film. I guess maybe drunk college students can't really hit that high level of turgid gorgeousness in lip-locking, but hopefully they'll keep practicing. UNICEF is an organization which has helped countless women and children stricken by poverty, famine, and disaster, and in the wake of the horrific earthquakes in Haiti, they need our help more than ever.

I have created a PDF book called "Epistle: Love Letters to the Visual Environment." It is a collection of eight pages from my collage book, all along the themes of romance, sweetness, delight, and whole-heartedness. Volume One is called "Doo-Wop," and is appropriate for anyone who likes jukeboxes.
